Volunteers are welcomed by the members of the tree nursery and staff of the nursery school, who are happy to share experiences whilst working together.
At the tree nursery, volunteers can help with day to day tasks, such as watering, weeding, filling seed pots and transplanting seedlings. Other tasks vary according to the time of year.
In the nursery school volunteers can observe teaching and under supervision, work with small groups of children.
The project is situated in a safe and tranquil rural setting with a view towards the summit of Mount Kenya. Some of the tree project members are experienced mountain guides who will be delighted to show volunteers around the locality.
Accommodation is provided at the nearby Youth Hostel or for volunteers with their own tents in the campsite. Electricity, flush toilets and showers are available along with basic self-catering facilities. Volunteers are expected to provide their own food, which can be purchased in the nearby settlement of Naro Moru. There are banks, internet cafes and a well-stocked supermarket in the town of Nanyuki.
Getting there: Volunteers should organise their own flights to Nairobi. By prior arrangement volunteers can be met at the airport and driven to the project site (three hours from the capital).
Visas: Visas are required by almost all visitors to Kenya, including British Nationals. These can be paid for in cash (U.S.$, GBP or K.Sh.) on arrival at Jomo Kenyatta Airport. The Kenya High Commission website gives the current fee. It is important that visitors give the reason for their stay as a holiday. The role of volunteer gives the visit a more formal status and can cause complications.
Costs: For the latest costs of accommodation and transport in Kenya please contact Joseph Wanjau (Chairman of the Tree Project and Youth Hostel Manager) at wanjaujoseph2000@yahoo.com
Extras: No doubt, whilst in Kenya, visitors will wish to take advantage of any spare time to see the spectacular countryside and wildlife. Joseph Wanjau can help organise treks on Mt. Kenya, safaris to all the game parks as well as accommodation in Nairobi.Volunteers are welcomed by the members of the tree nursery and staff of the nursery school, who are happy to share experiences whilst working together.
